Sandwiches from Esposito's Pork Store

Eat It: The Brooklyn Food Blog turned one year old July 18th and I'm celebrating with a contest! To enter, write about your favorite restaurant or meal in Brooklyn and email it to EatItBrooklyn (at) gmail (dot) com; don't forget to include photos! Two lucky winners will each receive a copy of the new book out by Andrew Coe called Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States and will have their submission published here on Eat It! Special consideration will be given to those who write about Chinese food!

I had a craving for Roast Beef sandwiches the other day and thought I'd try getting it at G. Esposito and Sons Pork Store, (357 Court Street, between President & Union, 718-875-6863) the place with the big fiberglass pig outside, waving to passersby, beckoning them to come in. Inside, dry sausages of all sizes hang from the ceiling and all sorts of goodies fill the shelves.

My roast beef sandwich came piled high, and I ordered it with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, salt & pepper on a roll. It was one of the best Roast Beef sandwiches I have ever had. It was perfect. Tender meat, good roll, well seasoned. Lovingly made as well by the mean behind the counter. It so hit the spot. I ate half before I realized I needed to take a picture!

My BF ordered the sweet Sopressata sandwich with provolone, lettuce, tomato & mustard. This was great too, with thinly sliced provolone, delicious meat, on a crusty sesame seed roll.

I highly recommend this place if you're desiring deli sandwiches - there's more to this place than pork!

Sandwiches from Caputo's Fine Foods

Today is a milestone to celebrate - it's my 101st post! It's been an amazing journey so far, with lots of good food and much appreciated & enjoyed comments from readers. I feel excited by the seemingly endless supply of places to visit, eat at and write about!

If you want good sandwiches, you need to take yourself to Caputo's Fine Foods, Inc. (460 Court St., between 3rd & 4th Place, 718-855-8852). It's an amazing place with so many delicious Italian foods for sale. There are freezers full of pastas and ravioli, the deli counter is loaded down with meats and cheeses and the olive bar has assorted preserved and pickled goods to choose from. They also make a mean sandwich.

I listened to my craving recently and ordered a Sweet Soppresata salami sandwich on Caputo's small Ciabatta bread with pickled roasted red peppers, lettuce and mustard and the thinnest slices of strong Provolone cheese you'll ever see. The bread is perfect - nicely crusty on the outside, dense and chewy on the inside, yet fluffy and airy.

My boyfriend ordered a sandwich with Prosciutto & Smoked Gouda, lettuce, tomato & mustard on the same Ciabatta bread. Again, it was delicious. The thinly sliced cheese adds a hint of flavor, the meat was fresh (also sliced thinner than paper) and everything is perfectly proportioned and goes so well together. These sandwiches aren't loaded down with a ton of ingredients; they make more sense than that, which enables you to enjoy them.

Go here soon, get a sandwich and some ravioli and sauce for dinner later. Yum!

Tasty Sandwiches from Ted & Honey

I wrote about Ted and Honey here a few weeks ago when I wrote about a delicious cookie I had from there. I went back to have lunch the other day and got to sit outside, where they've set up a few tables and chairs, to enjoy my sandwich, and bask in the beautiful weather while taking in the sights and sounds of busy Clinton St.

This is a BLAT - Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado and Tomato on Ciabatta bread (you get 6 or 7 bread options to choose from). It came with a small side salad with big homemade-seeming croutons and a vinaigrette dressing. It was so good. The terrifically smoky, salty bacon comes from a local farm and is organic and the addition of avocado really made it special. The tomatoes were ripe and juicy and there was a perfect amount of mayo. It was a seriously good sandwich. Ted & Honey (264 Clinton at Verandah Pl., 718-852-2212).

***UPDATE - 10/4/08***
I went back to Ted & Honey the other day and had a sort of bizarre experience. The service was SO slow and so weird. My sandwich was placed in a bag without any wrapping to keep it together. My friends and I were treated almost like a burden. It was enough to make me think twice about going back.
